Wall Mural

Our school wall is looking amazing. We were delighted when Ms. Feery asked us to also leave our mark on the school mural.

Yoga

Thank you Maura for a wonderful introduction to yoga today, We are looking forward to learning some more poses next week.

Capacity

In maths we are working on capacity. Capacity is the maximum amount a given container can hold. Today we had a hands on lesson in maths to see how much water different containers hold. We are focusing on 1 litre.

Australia

This month we are learning all about Australia in Geography. In science we are going to learn about two famous Australian animals the Koala and the Kangaroo. 
The Didgeridoo is a famous Australian musical instrument. Today we all the opportunity to try and play a real didgeridoo. We heard some very funny sounds as the girls tried  it out!! We listened to a CD of a man playing the didgeridoo it sounded very different than the music we listen to.
After learning about the Koala we created some beautiful charcoal drawings of a Koala.

School Tour

Today the girls got the letter regarding the school tour. We are going to visit Lullymore Heritage Park on Thursday the 22nd June. Please have the money and the permission slip returned by Thursday 8th June. Parents if you are interested in coming on the trip please send in a letter. I will do a raffle as only one parent will be able to join us on the school tour.

Planting

Our lettuce seeds have been very busy growing in planter pots and today we transferred them into the grow bag in our outdoor classroom. Hopefully we will soon enjoy eating our own homegrown lettuce.

Attendance

We had great attendance in 1st class in the month of April. 17 girls  were in everyday. Keep up the good work.
 

Buddy Bench

We got two beautiful new buddy benches in our school yard. Here we are enjoying the new bench.

GAA

The girls are really improving at their GAA skills. Well done girls. Keep it up.

 

Library

This year we are really enjoying picking books from the library. It is wonderful to have access to such a wide variety of books. Fairytales and books about animals are very popular in our class. We have a fabulous library and we really enjoy our weekly visit.

Easter

Happy Easter from 1st class!

Art and Geography

Brazil is the country the girls are covering in Geography at the moment. In art they studied a famous Brazilian artist Romero Britto and they each created a picture based on his work.

Attendance

Well done to all the girls who had full attendance in March and a special well done to the girls who have not missed a day in the last 3 months.

Planting

Our outdoor classroom is up and running. This month we are starting our planting. 
Thursday we each planted our own lettuce seeds. We planted the seeds in compost in milk cartons in a week we will transfer them to the grow bags and put them out in the outdoor classroom.
 
Tuesday we planted our strawberry plants in their grow bag. We hope they will grow. We all had a turn putting compost in the bag.

Money

At the moment the girls are learning about money in maths. It is a really important topic and the girls are enjoying counting money. Ms Dunleavy set up stations in the room linking in with money.

Owl Babies

In English this week we are reading the story Owl Babies. The girls are really enjoying the story and the discussions we are having about the story.
We also have done some nice activities on this story.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

We are celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge and St Patricks Day in our school. It is lovely to celebrate been Irish and what better way than to speak as much Irish as we can. The girls in 1st are wonderful for greeting teachers as Gaeilge every day.
Monday
Today we coloured and cut Irish flags. We had to listen to the instructions as Gaeilge.
Tuesday
Today we had a wonderful day. We took part in Gaeilge paired reading with 4th class. They were wonderful at reading and asking us questions. Check out the Seachtain na Gaeilge album for more photos.
We also had 2 wonderful Irish Musicians in who played some wonderful tunes for us.
Wednesday
Today we had a lovely obstacle course to complete. The 5th class gave us the instructions as Gaeilge. Check out the Seachtain na Gaeilge album to see us in action.

Story Telling Workshop

Today we had the wonderful storyteller Brendon Nolan in our school. He told us some wonderful stories. Thank you Brendan.

World book day 2017

We had a wonderful day celebrating world book day in our school. We all dressed up as characters from our favourite book. We took part in a paired reading session with 4th class. We also had a lovely assembly with the whole school where we got to show off our wonderful costumes. The parents association ran a book and stationery fair in our school hall so we all got a chance to buy some lovely books.

Our Solar System

We had great fun today recreating the planets, sun and moon in our Solar system. We will be learning all about the Solar system over the next month.

Butterflies

In science we are learning about the lifecycle of the butterfly. In art today we did fold over butterfly paintings. The children really enjoyed it and the results were great for our first time.

Maths

In maths this month we are focusing on shape and space -2D shapes and Number-Odd and even. 
Odd and even
We are learning rhymes to help us remember odd and even.
Yesterday we made odd street and even street. We will use it to help us remember.
We also discussed whether our own homes belong on odd or even street.

Grandparents Day

Thank you to all the grandparents who came to visit first class. We loved hearing your stories from school long ago. What a lovely way to finish Catholic Schools week.


 

 

St Brigids Day

This week is Catholics School week all over Ireland. In our class we have been enjoying the week so far. We have discussed Pope Francis and have a new appreciation of the work he does for the Catholic church. Today is St. Brigid's Day and we really enjoyed weaving the rushes to make a St Brigid's cross. We are really looking forward to Grandparenyts day on Friday. We hope lots of our Grandparents come to visit.
 

Attendance

 
Well done we had 13 girls who didnt miss a day in January. Well done girls. Keep up the great work.
We had 5 girls who received a prize and a cert for not missing a day in November, December and January.

 Punctuality

Today we had 8 girls who were on time for school everyday. We had lots of girls who made big improvements.

A fun website if you want to work on the Hundred square. Ideas: Colour 7/56/21/etc green. Count in 2s/3's/4's/5's/10s and colour every number you land on red. Colour even numbers pink and odd numbers purple.  Colour the answer yellow 61+10= _  etc.
 

Science and English

Today we made Rice Krispie buns. We really enjoyed watching watching the chocolate melt and we loved the smell. We recorded the steps by drawing pictures and tomorrow we will write the procedure.

This week we had two tables of the week. Well done ladies.

Geography and English

At the moment we are learning all about weather. We have recorded the weather everyday this week. We had fun in art today making our own weather recorder.
 

English and Science

This month we are are working on Procedure writing in English and Heat in Science. We decided to make jelly to make our lesson more fun and easier for the children to understand. The children made jelly and we discussed what happened to the jelly cubes and the water. The boiling water made the jelly cubes dissolve and the water changed colour. After we made the jelly we drew and wrote down the steps involved.
If you are baking or cooking with your child- Get them to follow the recipe/instructions and get them to orally recap on what you have done.
 

The Robin

We really enjoyed learning all about the robin. We have wrote poems, coloured the Robin and also constructed a robin
 

Length

In Maths we are working on length. The girls had great fun measuring a variety of items and distances. They used cubes, straws and strides.

In our class we are really trying hard to work on punctuality. School starts at 8:50 and it is really important to be on time for school. We had five girls who were on time for school everyday. We had four girls who really made a great effort to be on time.
 

 

 

Credit Union

Well done to all the girls who save with the Credit Union. Today one lucky saver won a selection box .
 

 

Christmas Wreaths

Its beginning to feel alot like Christmas in room 7. 
One of our wonderful girls made us a Christmas pudding. It was delicious. Here we are enjoying some pudding.

Open Day

Today we had a great time at Open Day. Ms Noone put on a beautiful drama performance by all the classes. The parents then came to visit the classrooms. In first class we had stations set up.
1. Gaelige- Bialann
Ag Deanamh ról-imirt as Gaeilge.
2. Numeracy- Snakes and Ladders 
3. Literacy- Reading books with the telephone and the Toobaloo
4. SESE- Paleontologists
In role as a paleontologists discovering dinosaur fossils and creating dinosaur skeletons.
5. Art- Constructing a dinosaur using playdough and a variety of materials

Science Week

It is Science week in Ireland from the 13th-20th November. Science is a cool subject and we love it in our classroom. This month we are learning all about Dinosaurs and the role of a paleontologist. We also completed some cool experiments.

Team Hope

Well done to the girls in First class and their families who supported Team Hope. 6 children will be very happy to recieve our Christmas Shoebox.

Halloween

Today the girls dressed up in their Halloween costumes. I have to say they all looked fantastic. We also danced very well in our Céilí Na Samhna. Happy Halloween.
One of  our very talented mums carved a pumkin and sent it in for first class to enjoy. Thank you.
 

 

Literacy Lift Off

Literacy Lift Off is an intensive programme of reading and writing. The girls are in three small groups with a teacher per group.
Reading-It gives the girls plenty of opportunities to read a wide range of books suitable for their level, work on a variety of reading strategies and comprehension skills.
Writing- The girls have opportunities to write independently and practice writing for different purposes- postcards, lists, cards, emails, sentences, etc.
 
Station 1- New text with Ms Kelly
Children encounter a new book at this station. Encourages the children to develop a range of strategies to read new text.
 
Station 2-Familiar Text with Ms Kehoe
Pupils reread books at this station to encourage enjoyment, fluency and understanding.
Station 3- Writing with Mrs Carroll
Children gain confidence in their ability to write. Teacher supports the girls as they work through a variety of writing topics.
 

Halloween

Halloween is nearly upon us. In first class today we enjoyed tasting the traditional Halloween brack. There was great excitement to see who would discover the ring.

Peer Tutoring

This year the sixth class have helped the first class with the laptops for 15mins every Wednesday. It is a great learning experience for both classes. Sixth have to use patience, their own knowledge and leadership qualities during this time and the first class in return are supported and are more motivated to succeed in front of the older girls. A sense of enjoyment, teamwork, social interaction and communication skills are been developed by all.

Healthy Eating

Last week was healthy eating week in our school. In our class we took a look at the Food pyramid and we discussed heathy foods and how we could make better choices . On Friday we did fruit and vegetable tasting with Ms Glesson and some parents.

    

 

Road Safety

We had a special visit from Emer who works for the Road Safety Authority. She gave us lots of information and safety tips for pedestrians and cyclists. We also sang and danced the safe cross code. This year we will become a Seatbelt Sheriff!!

 

 

 

Laptops

We have started to use laptops this year yippee!!!! The 6th class girls were very good and they helped us get started. We are using a programme to help us learn to type. We really enjoyed it.

   

 

 

 

Maths for Fun
